Shashindra Pal Tyagi, who was once an Air Force chief, has been arrested by CBI for allegedly abusing his official position by corrupt means.
He was arrested along with his cousin Sanjeev Tyagi and a Delh-based lawyer Gautam Khaitan. “They were arrested on the allegations of who accepted illegal gratification for exercising influence through corrupt or illegal means,” said CBI.
The arrest has been made in connection with the alleged irregularities in the AgustaWestland VVIP chopper deal worth 3,600 crores.
The deal was signed when Congress was in power. Tyagi’s arrest is the first high-profile arrest made by acting CBI Director Rakesh Asthana, who headed the investigation.
Tyagi, who retired in 2007, was questioned for hours by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) earlier in May this year. He was also questioned by the CBI extensively in the past in this case.
As per CBI, the bribe amount amount was 12 per cent of main amount.
CBI said that all the accused have been arrested under Section 120B, Section 420 IPC and Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988. They were called for questioning at the CBI headquarters.
