The woman who accused an MLA from the ruling Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh for gang-raping was found dead.
MLA Arun Verma had been accused by the woman of raping her with eight other men around four years ago. The MLA has now been charged of murdering her under IPC Section 302.
According to reports, woman was found dead on Sunday night behind Panchayat Bhawan in Sultanpur. Reports say that she had left home for some work on Saturday but did not return.
Reports say that the MLA had been absolved by the police from the rape case filed against him by the woman’s father when it was found that he was in Lucknow at the time of the incident.
Verma says that it is a political conspiracy to tarnish his name and demands a CBI inquiry.
The news comes while the elections in the state are on. Sultanpur will go to polls on February 27, in the fifth of the seven-phase election.
Crime in the state has been one of the major issues hounding Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav. The alleged involvement of one of his own MLAs makes things tougher for him.
Questions have been raised on the failing law & order problem in the state and the impunity with which crimes have been committed in the past.
All eyes are now on Akhilesh. Whether he sacks the MLA ahead of the polls or not is what the Opposition parties and everyone else is looking at.
Verma was the youngest winner in the 2012 elections in the state.
