Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi has been running into controversies since we can remember, after all, it stars controversy queen Kangana Ranaut! The latest controversy after the directorial credits of the film being leaked, is Jodhaa Akbar actor Sonu Sood, quitting Manikarnika. Sood, who was playing a pivotal role in the biographical film based on the life of Rani Laxmibai of Jhansi, reportedly had an ugly spat with its director (now Kangana). After Sonu Sood’s exit from Manikarnika, the actress is furious about him leaving portions unfilmed.
In the film, Sonu Sood was reportedly playing Sadashivrao Bhau, the commander-in-chief of the Maratha army during Jhansi‘s regime.
As Sonu Sood quit from Manikarnika, Kangana Ranaut, who plays Jhansi, said that “he left the project mid-way since he didn’t want to work under a woman director”, as per IANS news agency.
The 45-year-old actor had shot some parts of the film before he recently decided to quit the project.
According to the Queen actress, Sonu Sood’s exit from Manikarnika was because ‘he doesn’t prefer female directors’. She said,
“He refused to meet me. He refused to work under a woman director. Even though the team suggested that they have full faith in me, Sonu had neither dates nor faith.”
Earlier, Kangana created a storm when a clapboard featuring her name did rounds on social media. She took over as director (Krish) after he got busy with another NTR biopic, starring Vidya Balan.
After Sonu Sood’s exit from Manikarnika, Kangana said, “Sonu and I haven’t even met since last year. The producers showed him the film and writers narrated the patchwork to him. He refused to meet me.”
It may be recalled that Sonu has earlier worked with female directors like Farah Khan in Happy New Year and never had a problem!
And now, in an interesting turn of events, the actor himself clarified his exit. He reacted to Kangana’s comments and said,
“The gender of the director is not the issue. Competence is. Let’s not confuse the two. That’s all I would like to say.”
After Sonu Sood’s exit from Manikarnika, Kangana’s co-star in Tanu Weds Manu Returns, actor Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, has been roped in as the replacement.
Meanwhile, Sonu is currently shooting Rohit Shetty’s Simmba and has also wrapped up his other project Paltan, opposite Arjun Rampal.
Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi will hit screens on January 25, 2019. It will be the same day as Hrithik Roshan’s next film Super 30.
