A massive expose by Times Now  reveals that Congress President Sonia Gandhi had allegedly written a letter in 2004 to the then Finance Minister P. Chidambaram on a petition made by a private firm named First Global. The reason this private firm got this special treatment was because they were the financiers to the Tarun Tejpal-headed news portal Tehelka. The letter exposes an alleged quid pro quo between the Congress President and Tejpal after a seemingly conflict of interests.

Just a few months into their regime in 2004, Sonia Gandhi described the treatment perpetrated by various revenue enforcement agencies over the Tehelka financier as ‘unjust and unfair’ and reportedly wrote to Chidambaram to look upon the matter “on priority”.

In her two letters penned down in 2004, the then chairperson of the National Advisory Council (NAC) Sonia Gandhi directed P. Chidambaram to look into a presentation made to her by the director of First Global “on priority”.

Interestingly, just four days after the letters were written, a Group of Ministers (GoM) was formed by the UPA government. And less than a week after, the GoM was successfully able to clear First Global from the investigation.

It is to be noted that it was around the same time when Tehelka.com was successively doing stories on the then Gujarat Chief Minister, Narendra Modi.

Reacting to the Times Now report, P. Chidambaram said:

My noting on the letter is correct. I am certain that, on behalf of the ministry, I would have sent a reply based on the material put up to me. The letter of Mrs. Gandhi and my reply should be read together. I suggest that the media may ask the government to release the reply to the letter.

On the other hand, in a special interview given to Times Now, BJP MP Subramanian Swamy expressed his desire to have the Enforcement Directorate (ED) probe into the matter and register an FIR against Congress for tampering the evidences related to the incident.

Do you think Sonia directed her favor to Tehelka in order to repay for all the stories done by the latter on their main opposition Narendra Modi? Please share in your views in the comments section below.
