The song has been written, composed and performed by Sheetal Sathe. She is a associated with the cultural organization ‘Kabir Kala Manch’, a troupe of Dalit protest singers and poets from Pune. This song, ‘Ae Bhagat Singh Tu Zinda Hai’ (Bhagat Singh you live), is a cry of those oppressed by the post-independence rulers of India. Many in India believe that the only change that happened on August 15, 1947, was the change in rulers; the system of oppression remains intact. Bhagat Singh was one of India’s greatest revolutionaries hanged to death on March 23, 1931, alongside two other equally great patriots, Rajguru and Sukhdev, for opposing the British rule.
