Aam Adami Party (AAP) MLA Somnath Bharti was arrested around 4 a.m. on Tuesday, hours after he surrendered on Monday night.
Bharti, who is accused in an alleged attempt to murder and domestic violence case filed by his wife, evaded arrest for nearly a week after the Supreme Court ordered him to give himself up.
The former Delhi law minister has been arrested under various sections of the IPC including attempt to murder, cheating and dishonesty, causing miscarriage without woman’s consent among others, said Dependra Pathak, Joint Commissioner of Police (Southwest).
Citing his reasons for not surrendering, Bharti’s lawyer, Deepak Khosla, said that his father was unwell and that is why he could not surrender. He was avoiding and not evading police.
An FIR was registered against the MLA following a complaint by his wife Lipika Mitra. Bharti had said:
“There was a warrant and I was availing legal remedies till the Honourable Supreme Court directed me to surrender. In compliance with the direction…I am here to surrender.”
Earlier, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had termed Bharti as an embarrassment to the party and asked him to surrender.
Meanwhile, a bail application will be moved before a sessions court on Tuesday, said Bharti’s lawyer.
