Social media apps are addictive! This is the truth that no one can deny. That is why they should be used in a sensible way. However, there are times when that simple truth skips our mind. Over the years, we have seen many incidents of such addiction. The present one is Snapchat addiction due to which a teen got bedridden. Wondering what happened? Let us fill you in with the details.
We are well-aware about the different filters that one can use on Snapchat for taking pictures and videos. This is what got 19-year-old Maisie Hazelwood addicted.
Maisie became a part of the Snapchat world when she started using this app a year back. However, after using it for some months, the app stopped working on her mobile. This posed a great crisis for her.
While using the filters for images and videos, Maisie got addicted to her ‘perfect’ looks. When the app stopped working, she was unable to look at her real face without the virtual makeover. In her own words:
‘My favourite filter was one that gave me longer eyelashes and a nose piercing, which made my face look absolutely flawless – any spot or blemish I had would disappear. But then I fell in love with how it made me look, and it took me away from the reality of my own looks. I stopped wearing make-up completely and became bed bound because I wouldn’t be able to look at myself in the mirror because I hated what I saw.’
Yes, her virtual addiction worked as an escape from her real life. Eventually, the line between the real and virtual was blurred for her. She was afraid to show her real self to the outside world and thought that people would make fun of her. This is what she said:
‘I completely shut myself out and wouldn’t let anyone see me, as I thought people would laugh at me for being such an ugly person in comparison to what they saw on Snapchat.’
This caused anxiety in the teen and in her petrified state she was unable to get out of the bed. Her confidence was broken because she was unable to share her filtered images.
Eventually, she got rid of this addiction to resume her normal life. She also took to social media to share her story.
This story should act as a caution for those who are heading towards Snapchat addiction. Are you one among those?
