10 Singers Who Died Of Drug Overdose

An overdose occurs when a person ingests some form of drug or stimulant in a quantity that the body cannot handle. Usually overdoses prove to be fatal and lead to death. Besides that, overdoses can also easily cause a person to lose his/her mental faculties. The deadliest drug in the world, heroin, is known to be the number one killer among all drugs. Celebrity overdoses are well known to the world and some great voices have also fallen victim to drug overdose. Here, we look at some of the well known singers who died of drug overdose.

10. Amy Winehouse

Amy Winehouse was a well known English singer and songwriter. She won in 5 out of a total of 6 nominations for her album ‘Back to Black’ in 2006. She died of a drug/alcohol overdose in July 2011. She was an extremely talented artist and had a fairly long career considering the fact that she died at a very young age of 28. Amy Winehouse is ranked high on the list of the Top 100 Women in Music. Her album is one of the largest selling British albums of the decade so far.



9. Judy Garland

Judy Garland was a well known American actor and a singer. She died of an accidental drug overdose at the age of 47 in 1969. Throughout her career she was at a constant war with her personal life, drugs and alcohol. She was a very versatile entertainer and has been awarded many major awards including a posthumously awarded Grammy in 1997. She is also acknowledged as among the best actresses of American Cinema. Judy Garland is most recognized from her role in the Wizard of Oz.

8. Tim Hardin

Tim Hardin’s complete name was James Timothy Hardin and he was born on the 23rd of December 1941 in the state of Oregon in the United States. He was a folk composer and also played the piano and the guitar. Some of his songs like “Reason to Believe” have often been covered by many well known artists. He died from an overdose of heroin in 1980.

7. Whitney Houston

Whitney Houston was one of the most awarded female singers of all time. She was also a successful actress and a producer of feature films. She died at the age of 48 because of an accidental overdose which led to her drowning in a bathtub. Whitney Houston is one of the most successful R&B and Pop artists of all time and has more than one record breaking album to her name. She constantly struggled with her drug abuse problems throughout her life even attending rehab programs to counter it.



6. Jerry Garcia

Jerome John Jerry Garcia was an enigmatic front-man for an equally enigmatic group known as The Grateful Dead. He was born on the 1st of August 1942 in San Francisco, California. He was a part of many musical groups but was most well known for his work with the Grateful Dead. He died of a drug related heart attack when he was in rehabilitation in August 1995. Garcia too was constantly at war with his addiction to drugs like heroin and cocaine.

5. Billie Holiday

Billie Holiday was a well known jazz singer born on the 17th of April 1917 in Pennsylvania, United States. Her unique vocal skills which had drawn a great deal influence from instrumentals in Jazz helped give shape to a new way to phrase and change tempos in vocal jazz. During her career Billie Holiday recorded as many as 12 albums within the span of 7 years. She was an immensely successful jazz singer during and after her time. She was financially wrecked because of her addictions and died of a heart failure in 1959.


4. Jimi Hendrix

James Marshall Jimi Hendrix was born on the 27th of November 1942 in Seattle, Washington. He is considered by many as the greatest guitar player of all time. He is one of the most influential musicians of all time and even in his era – which lasted a short three years – his contributions were immense. He died at the age of 27 and although his death is shrouded with controversy, it is widely believed that he died of a drug overdose. He was well known to use the psychedelic drug known as LSD.

3. Janis Joplin

Janis Joplin was born on the 19th of January 1943 and died 4th October 1970. She was born in the US state of Texas. Joplin was well known to fans and peers for her electric stage act which was well supported by her unique and powerful voice. She was known as the Queen of Rock and Roll in her prime and is ranked highly on the 100 greatest artists of all time. She died of a heroin overdose, a habit with which she had struggled a great deal.

2. Jim Morrison

The enigmatic front-man of the American Rock/Blues band The Doors, Jim Morrison was notorious with the moral police and the law but he was immensely popular amongst his fans. He was a great front-man who had a keen sense of observation and knew how to work the crowds towards the direction he chose. His wild antics on stage were surpassed only by the blend of psychedelic, blues and rock music that his band managed to put out. His constant dependency on drugs and alcohol caused his untimely death at the age of 27. He was born December 8, 1943 and died July 3, 1971.

Elvis Aaron Presley was not just a popular singer but was a youth and cultural icon known to the world as The King. He was born in Mississippi on the 8th of January 1935 and died on the 16th of August 1977 due to repeated drug and alcohol abuse. Elvis Presley was also a well known actor of his times and starred in several box office hits. He is among the highest selling solo pop singers of all time and has won every award there is both in his lifetime and after his death.
