Lucknow’s Sheroes Cafe, Run By Acid Attack Survivors, Is Forced To Shut Down. Yogi Adityanath, Are You Listening?

Everyone expects more and better for women from India, the world’s largest functioning democracy, but as per a poll of global experts, India is being considered as the world’s most dangerous country for women due to the high risk of sexual violence. One such vulnerable section among women folks are acid attack survivors. At least, they deserve the government’s immediate attention more than anything. Sadly, they, too, are given minimal help. A glaring example of this is that the famous Sheroes Cafe in Lucknow, run by acid attack survivors, is about to shut down.

The Allahabad high court has ordered its shut down by October 24.

The reason for this is the unending fight between two organization, Uttar Pradesh Mahila Kalyan Nigam and Chhanv foundation. Chhanv foundation is an NGO that took the initiative to start this cafe.

The problem started when the UP government failed to send the salaries of the support staff on time. Ashish Shukla, director of the Chhanv foundation, highlights UP Government’s mismanagement,

“While the government was transferring money directly into the accounts of the acid attack survivors. salaries of the support staff were often delayed because of a mismanagement of the corpus.”

What’s even worse is that the Mahila Kalyan Nigam has now written an unfair letter to Chhanv Foundation. It mentions that there is no reason to run this cafe anymore and it should be shut down. In addition to that, the letter also addressed that women workers will be given training under the National Skill Development Corporation to earn their livelihood.

This impractical suggestion will not help the acid attack survivors in any way whatsoever. Can basic training in sewing under NSDC help them earn a promising livelihood? Absolutely, no. Instead, it will make their life back to what it was before.

Laxmi Agarwal, an acid-attack survivor, is one of the core members of the Sheroes Cafe. When she first spoke about her unfortunate accident, the government hailed her as a hero. But now, when she needs real help, they might be busy making someone else hero only to forget them later.

Twitterati is trending #Savesheroes to make more and more people aware of this injustice. Let’s all stand up together.

It’s high time UP government takes strict measures to rehabilitate acid attack survivors.
