Sher Singh Rana, who belongs to the Sisodia clan of Rajputs, is a convicted murderer responsible for the 2001 assassination of Phoolan Devi aka The Bandit Queen, the then Samajwadi Party MP from Mirzapur constituency in Uttar Pradesh. The motive of the murder was to avenge the killing of 20 upper caste Thakurs by Phoolan’s gang on February 14, 1981, in Behmai, UP. Phoolan was shot dead from a close range by three masked gunmen in front of her Ashoka Road residence in Delhi when she returned home for lunch after attending Lok Sabha session on July 25, 2001.
In 2004, Rana had escaped from Tihar Jail and went to Afghanistan to bring back the relics of Prithvi Raj III, commonly known as Prithviraj Chauhan (1149-1192 CE), a king of the Hindu Chauhan dynasty, who ruled the kingdoms of Ajmer and Delhi in northern India during the latter half of the 12th century.
He had been deeply hurt when he heard how people in Afghanistan used to disrespect the king’s “resting place”
Rana told police that he got a fake passport from Ranchi and flew to Afghanistan on a student visa in earlu 2005 – nearly 10 months after he escaped the Tihar Jail.
He stayed in Afghanistan for three months and looked aggressively for the king’s “grave.” Surprisingly, he had no idea about where was it located.
However, he soon found the place to be Ghazni. He had claimed that at a place called Deak, a small village on the outskirts of Ghazni, lies the tomb of Muhammad Ghori, and a few meters away was the Prithviraj Chauhan’s tomb.
In order to fulfil his mission, he mingled with the locals and convinced them that he had come from Pakistan to restore Ghori’s tomb. However, he dug Chauhan’s grave and collected sand from it. He even videotaped his work.

He had told media channels that he received grave threats to his life several times while he was on a mission to find Chauhan’s grave. He has even penned a book ‘Jail Diary: Tihar Se Kabul-Kandhar Tak.’
After coming back to India in April 2005, he sent the ‘ashes’ to Etawah and organsied a function with the help of politicians.
His mother has hailed him as “pride of the country.” There were also rumours that actor Ajay Devgn is keen to do a Sher Singh Rana biopic.
