Two years back, Shashi Tharoor delivered an eloquent speech during the esteemed Oxford Union debate where he made himself extremely popular with his sound argument as to why Britain owes reparations to India for all the wrongs it committed during its 190-year-rule.
This is what he had said,
Well, he is back with the same intensity.
Recently, he voiced some valid points in an interview with the British television channel, Channel 4, where he targeted their education system. He said,
Why don’t you teach colonial history in schools? Children doing A-levels in history don’t know a single line of colonial history. There is a historical amnesia about what the empire entailed.
British children from the new generation are not taught how Britishers oppressed, slaved and tortured Indians for 200 years. They must know about the atrocities their forefathers committed and the fact that Britain fueled its Industrial revolution by plundering India.
He also clarified that their troubled past is a bygone thing, and it will not affect their current trade deals. He continued,
India’s economy is as big as Britain’s now. I think we don’t have a chip on our shoulder when dealing with you (UK) but If you don’t know where you’ve come from, how will you appreciate where you’re going.
Well said, Shashi Tharoor.
