Shaktiman, The Horse, Passes Away; Twitter Mourns, Calls Him Brave Soldier

Shaktiman, the horse that broke its leg allegedly because of an assault by a BJP MLA died today in Dehradun. The beast was undergoing treatment following a prosthetic leg that was fitted to it after the amputation of its injured leg.


SSP Dehradun Sadanand Date told reporters that the horse was unable to fully recover from an infection.

“The horse passed away at 5.30 PM. He was suffering from medical-related complications. The exact cause will be known only after post-mortem,” IG Garhwal Sanjay Gunjyal said.



Uttarakhand Chief Minister Harish Rawat expressed his grief over the death of the horse. “It was a brave soldier of Uttarakhand and died while performing its duty,” he said.


Shaktiman, 13 years old, was injured on March 14 during clashes between police and BJP protestors. It is alleged that BJP MLA Ganesh Joshi had hit the horse with a stick breaking his leg.

But a video footage that was shared on social media showed that the horse might have fractured its leg when its leg while backing away from the protestors.


The horse was part of Uttarakhand Mounted Police for years.

Twitter is expressing condolences on the passing away of the horse.
