Last June, BCCI had appointed former India cricketer, Anil Kumble, as the head coach of the Indian cricket team for a period of one year. Under his conduct, the team India has successfully moved forward in both ODI and Test formats.
Kumble’s tenure ends after ICC Champions Trophy in June, and the BCCI is currently looking for the next head coach.
Though a few Indian players have expressed that Kumble’s term as the coach must be extended, it seems that BCCI is looking for other options, too. According to the reports, BCCI recently contacted Sehwag to apply for the coach’s position. A top BCCI official said,
We have contacted Sehwag during the IPL and asked him to consider applying for the job of India coach. But he won’t be the only one applying because we expect other former players to also thrown their hats in the ring.
The next contract is likely to run until the 2019 World Cup.
Though Sehwag has denied being contacted by BCCI officials, the ace cricketer can be a good contender for this position. After having served the team for more than a decade, he has the right experience and exposure to lead India.
Also, Sehwag has recently played the role of a mentor with Kings XI Punjab, who finished fifth in the IPL 10.
Apart from Sehwag, Rahul Dravid is one of the key candidates to coach India.
So, who’s your pick?
