Students these days are very well aware when it comes to taking care of their own hygiene and surroundings. This is a story of a school in Kurumbapatty, where students took things seriously when a strong unpleasant odour almost became unbearable to them, affected from which they decided to create a change, good for everyone.
Inspired by Design for change, 5 young boys at Panchayat Union Middle School, took to their ‘Feel-Imagine-Do-Share’ method, and decided to get to the bottom of the problem.
The school set up a committee of students comprising of 13-year-olds – Supikpandian, Santhosh, Dhiyanithi, Ragul, and Prabaharan. They were given a task to identify the source of the odour. They did some research on this and finally came up with a conclusion, that the foul smell was coming from the school washroom. It was also revealed by them that the school washroom was in need of urgent repair. All it lacked was a basic drainage system.
However, it came into light that the cost of installing a good sanitary and drainage system was too high. They then came up with something unusual yet innovative. “A boy in the committee said that when he drank water, he saw that the 20 litre upside down water container, which was looking like a urinary tank. And he said he could set up a urinary tank by using that,” as said on the DFC video.
Funds were then collected by teachers and students, they were handed over the empty bottles. The drainage system was set up, pipes were connected to the necks of the bottles. A line of drip irrigation pipes were set up above the urinals in order to flush them. A new look was given to the entire washroom. Thanks to these innovative minds, who came up with an idea that could benefit many of them.
The team also got an award and cash prize worth Rs. 50,000
