Apart from his acting skills, superstar Rajinikanth is also known for being the highest paid film actor in southern Asia. But The Ashram, a school run by his wife Latha Rajinikanth, has been locked for alleged non-payment of rent and this has not come as pleasant news for Thalaiva fans.
It was surprising for the students of The Ashram matriculation school to see the gates of the building locked when they came to the attend the school on August 16. The students were immediately shifted to Ashram ICSE school near Velachery.
Around 300 children study at the school located in Guindy that was locked due to alleged non-payment of rent. The school is aided by Raghavendra Foundation.
As per the report by India Today, the building owner Venkateshvaralu said that gates of the school, that was leased out in 2002, were locked by him on Tuesday night. In 2013, he had requested the management to evacuate the building as the rent was not being paid timely.
Talking about the long pending dues by the school, Venkateshvaralu said,
14 months ago I filed a suit in the court seeking them to leave after paying rent which came upto Rs 10 crore. Their lawyer said that they cannot pay such a huge amount and instead paid only Rs 2 crore. After that, no money has been paid and Latha has not responded or signed the memo. The service tax per month comes upto Rs 60,000 and I paid it last quarter from my pocket and I can’t do it again. Now I can tell the IT department that there is no tenant, and so I don’t have to pay any tax.
However, management of the school has issued a press release which requests public not to believe “the news being circulated regarding the school”.
