Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led NDA government has approved the rehabilitation scheme which will give permanent homes and jobs to families who migrated to Punjab during 1984-Sikh riots.
The move comes after the recommendation of Justice (retd) GP Mathur Committee, set up by the government in 2014, to look into various grievances related to the 1984 riots.
Also, the home ministry has approved the compensation of Rs. 2 lakh to be given to more than 1,000 families.
Home Ministry official told Tribune that the scheme is being reopened only for a limited period of six months from the date of sanctioning of the scheme.
The government has also decided to provide skills to members of such families.
The official said that the recommendation is being forwarded to the Ministry of Skill Development and Punjab government with a request to formulate scheme in this regard.
After the assassination of the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on October 31, 1984, clashes broke out and Sikhs were targeted which resulted in 3,325 deaths in the country.
