The young woman who featured in a video walking through a fort in a mini skirt has been arrested by the police in Saudi Arabia.
The model, Khulood, had shared a video on Snapchat where she was seen walking through an old fort in Saudi Arabia wearing a mini skirt and baring her mid-riff. The fort she was shown walking through is in the Najd desert, where a majority of conservative Saudi Arabians live.
A police spokesperson in Riyadh said,
She admitted to visiting the site in question with a male guardian, and that the viral videos were published by an account attributed to her without her knowledge.
Ever since the video was available on social media, the internet has been taken by a storm with competing hashtags appearing. Some commented that the woman should be arrested while other’s opined about a liberal society. Ibrahim al-Munayif, a Saudi writer, tweeted,
Just like we call on people to respect the laws of countries they travel to, people must also respect the laws of this country.
Social media has become a popular platform in Saudi Arabia for people to vent their frustration with the strict laws in the country. A majority of the population in the nation is under the age of 25 years, and the crown prince is a young man who is in his 30s. The crown prince has called for greater openings for entertainment in the country but has been silent on the strict gender segregation and rules against women in the country.
