Veteran Punjabi film actor Satish Kaul, who had ruled the hearts of millions of people and 70 mm screens of Punjabi cinema for over five decades, is now living a tragic life. Kaul, 63, has worked in over 300 Hindi and Punjabi films with actors like Dilip Kumar, Dev Anand, Shah Rukh Khan and a number of others. He had been accorded with the Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to Punjabi cinema in 2011 at PTC Punjabi Film Awards. He is now struggling with his old age and depression at a fan’s house in Patiala, Punjab.
Regarded as one of the best regional actors of the all times, Satish Kaul has been known as ‘Amitabh Bachchan of Punjabi Cinema’. He has been a part of a number of hit Punjabi films ‘Sassi Punnu’, ‘Fer Mamla Gadbad Gadbad’ and ‘Aazaadi The Freedom’. He has even shared screen with some big stars of Bollywood in Hindi films like Prem Parbat, Warrant, Karma, Gunaho Ka Faisla, Bhakti Me Shakti, Dance-Dance, Ram-Lakhan and Pyar To Hona Hi Tha.
Kaul had been living alone after his divorce as his wife and son had shifted to the US. Investing all the money he had, the actor started an acting school, a venture that unfortunately failed miserably, leaving him penniless.
Gradually, Satish Kaul disappeared from the films and there came a point in his life when there was no one to look after him.
In 2014, the veteran actor fell in his bathroom and suffered multiple injuries including a hip bone fracture. Following this, he was admitted to a private hospital in Patiala, Punjab, where he had to fight for his survival for a very long period of time.
His financial condition was so worse that he could not even afford to pay his own medical bills. Some time in July, 2015, The Innovative Artist Welfare Association came to his rescue offering him a financial help of Rs 70,000. The chief minister of Haryana, Manohar Lal Khattar too announced a financial assistance of Rs 2,50,000 for him.
All his fans had turned their backs on him. There were only a few including popular Punjabi singer Harbhajan Mann who visited him at the hospital. After having recovered, he was shifted to an old age home in Doraha, Punjab but was still battling old age, depression and health issues. This was when Anil Bharti, one of his admirers brought him to Ludhiana.
As per an old report (November 1, 2016) by The Times of India, Anil Bharti is a social activist who runs an old age home in Ludhiana and had been taking very good care of Satish Kaul. Later, in 2017, Amar Ujala reported that Parminder Kaur Bath, another fan of Satish Kaul learnt that his favorite actor is staying in an old age home.
Bath was such a huge fan of Kaul that she personally went to Ludhiana and completed all the formalities at the old age home to bring him to his residence in Punjabi Bagh, Patiala. Parminder even urged Satish Kaul’s fans to visit her home and meet the seasoned actor so that he can improve mentally and emotionally.
A graduate of the Film and Television Institute of India’s (FTII) 1969 batch, Satish Kaul was born on September 8,1954 in Kashmir. Bollywood actors Jaya Bachchan, Shatrugan Sinha, Zarina Wahab, Danny Denzongpa, Asha Sachdeva and Om Puri were his batch-mates at FTII.
