At an internal meeting, Sasikala was elected the chief of AIADMK’s legislature party.

Incumbent Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam announced that Sasikala, the party general secretary, was unanimously elected the legislature party leader at a meeting of party MLAs. He quickly resigned as the state’s chief minister.

Earlier on a short notice, Panneerselvam and other ministers met Sasikala at the Poes Garden residence of Jayalalithaa where Sasikala continues to live.

Sasikala, 61, is not an elected member of the assembly and had never held any post in the party.

She is fondly called as Chinamma (mother’s younger sister). She had taken charge of the party after a lot of coaxing from the partymen.

Sasikala had earlier appointed senior leaders, including some former ministers and a former mayor, to key party posts. Former ministers KA Sengottaiyan, S Gokula Indira and B V Ramana, besides ex-Mayor Saidai S Duraisamy were made the AIADMK’s organisation secretaries.

There was growing chorus among a section of the party for Sasikala to take charge as chief minister contending that it was unwise to for the party and government to have different power centres in the state.

However, DMK Working President MK Stalin expressed his worries about divisions in the ruling AIADMK after the death of Jayalalithaa.

“The people voted for a government to be headed by Ms Jayalalithaa in May 2016 and not for one to be run by Mr. O Panneerselvam or any other person from Ms. Jayalalithaa’s household,” 63-year-old leader said.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and Rajya Sabha MP Subramanian Swamy had said that it would be awkward if she goes on to become the chief minister of Tamil Nadu.

“There’s my case in the Supreme Court regarding the disproportionate assets. She’s also party to it. She is also one of the accused. So, it will be awkward if she becomes the CM. Moreover, before she fights by-elections, the Supreme Court judgement will come. So, going by the reports that she is not going to stake a claim to become the Chief Minister, I think, it’s a wise move,” Swamy said.
