Dr Sardar Soran Singh, a minister for minorities in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa region of Pakistan, was shot dead by gunmen from Tehreek e Taliban Pakistan or Pak Taliban.

A Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) Member of Provincial Assembly (MPA), Singh was special assistant to the Chief Minister of KP about minority related affairs.

Other reports state that Singh was brought in critical condition to a hospital in Pacha Killay where he succumbed to his injuries.

Singh was one of the few Sikhs living in the Taliban infested region of Pakistan. While other minorities left for safer areas within the country and even across the border in India, Singh’s family defied the terrorists in a land where they had been living for centuries.

A doctor by profession, Singh had a mercurial rise in politics. He was a member of the Jamaat-e-Islami for nine years before joining PTI in 2011.

Condolences poured on Twitter from across Pakistan. PTI chief Imran Khan was among those who expressed shocked at Soran Singh’s killing.

Bollywood singer Mika Singh too expressed his shock at the death of the Pakistani MPA.

This is not the first time that a minister from PTI has been gunned down in the region. In 2013, MPA Fareed Khan was shot dead by unknown gunmen in Hangu.

Meanwhile, Dr. Nazir S Bhatti, president of Pakistan Christian Congress (PCC), questioned why a Sikh minority leader was not provided foolproof security.

He said, “Sikh and Christian minorities in KP province are always under threat of Islamic extremists who have bombed Churches and worship places of Hindus and Sikhs and killed hundreds and KP provincial authorities are fully aware of recent threats but security of Sardar Soran Singh was not fool proof which he deserved as minorities minister.”
