This is going to be a year of debuts, as numerous star kids are making their first Bollywood appearances in theatres. And recently, Janhvi Kapoor and Ishaan Khatter starrer ‘Dhadak’ released on July 20, 2018, which is Janhvi’s debut movie. Jahnvi Kapoor is the daughter of late actress Sridevi and people naturally expected a lot from her. Ishaan, on the other hand, is Shahid Kapoor’ half-brother and hence has to match up to the big-gun. Thankfully ‘Dhadak’ opened up with decent responses.
Both Jahnvi and Ishaan received good reviews for their portrayals, and the movie is performing considerably well at the box office. The movie is an adaptation of Marathi superhit ‘Sairat’. The storyline for both the movies is the same and revolves around the life of two lovers who are victims of casteism.
However, Sairat’s Marathi backdrop has been replaced by a Rajasthani backdrop in Dhadak. There is another huge difference between the two movies. And this difference stems from the fact that one is a heavy-budgeted Bollywood project, while other is a small budget regional movie.
Directed and co-produced by Nagraj Manjule, the total budget for ‘Sairat‘ was Rs 4 crore, while it took Rs 70 crore to make ‘Dhadak‘. Also the former made a weekend collection of Rs 12.2 crore, while the later collected Rs 33.67 crore. Though the total collection count for the later is yet to come.
When it comes to the fees paid to the actors of the movie, there is again a huge difference. The 17-yr-old Rinku Rajguru and 25-yr-old Akash Thosar from ‘Sairat‘ received Rs 5 lakh each for their roles in the movie. In comparison, Janhvi Kapoor and Ishaan Khatter received Rs 40 lakh and Rs 70 lakh respectively.
However, once ‘Sairat‘ attained the blockbuster status, both its actors were paid a bonus of Rs 5 crore each. Well, the complete monetary destiny of ‘Dhadak‘ is yet to be materialized. What do you think it will make in total collections at the box office?
