Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s marital status has been a topic of discussion for years. In 1968, PM Modi got married at the age of 19 to Jashodaben Chimanlal, who was 17. But their marriage could not last long and they separated after a brief period. The relationship is believed to have never been consummated.

A teacher by profession, 66-year-old Jashodaben gets a monthly pension of Rs 14,000, and lives mostly with a brother and spends much of her time in prayer. Modi had declared Jashodaben as his wife. He had told a biographer that he “actually enjoys loneliness” and has said that because he has no children he is more likely to be a clean politician.

On February 7, Jashodaben met with an accident in Rajasthan’s Chittor district when the car she was travelling in, rammed a truck. One of her relatives, identified as Basantbhai Modi, succumbed to injuries on the spot. A woman relative, Vimla Modi, a gunman travelling with Jashodaben, and a five-year-old child were also injured. The sub divisional magistrate of Chittorgarh, Suresh Khatik, confirmed that “Jasodaben was fine and doctors who treated her and others referred them to Ahmedabad doctors.”
