It was certainly a sad day for the cricket fans when legendary player Sachin Tendulkar announced his retirement. However, now the team will once again feature the famous Tendulkar name. No, the ‘god of cricket’ is not getting back on the field, it’s his son who is all set to play the big matches. Arjun Tendulkar bagged a spot on the team list for India’s Under-19 cricket team who will play a four-day game against Sri Lanka.
This 18-year old is a left-arm fast bowler. Besides that, he is a lower-middle order batsman. Expectedly, senior Tendulkar expressed his glee over his son’s achievement. This is what he stated:
‘We are happy on Arjun being selected in India U-19 team. It is an important milestone in his cricketing life. Anjali (Tendulkar) and I will always support Arjun in his choices and pray for his success.’
There were questions about how he made the cut despite being 43rd on the list of wicket takers. This is what a member of the selection committee stated:
‘If you look at the List, Arjun is the only genuine quick bowler who has more than 15 wickets. Most of the bowlers above him are spinners with only Ajay Dev Goud (33 wickets) being a genuine all-rounder. He is a slow medium bowler while Arjun is a quick bowler.’
Twitterati quickly pointed out the fact that probably his selection was because of influence of Sachin Tendulkar. They didn’t hold back to talk about nepotism. Here are the tweets:
If u go and search then u will get 1000players like Arjun Tendulkar but u know what Arjun got a chance because he is child of Sachin. Still let’s hope that he has a bright future.

The question is, Arjun Tendulkar the cricketer will be picked had he not been the son, of the so called god of cricket?? @sachin_rt

Does he really deserve to be in India U-19 cricket team? #ArjunTendulkar

Arjun Tendulkar selected in India’s squad for u-19 . Is his selection on his merit or on his fathers fame and influence ? Are there not more talented young budding cricketers whose fathers are Aam Aadmi’s ? Point to ponder …

Till Arjun Tendulkar establishes himself — and even after that — charges of favoriteism n nepotism can’t be entirely ruled out!

I just hope no Eklavya was sacrificed for the rise of this Arjun #ArjunTendulkar

It most definitely IS Sachin’s son that’s been selected, not Arjun Tendulkar. Lets not pretend to be oh so naïve, Harsha. https://t.co/eYttV6OKcA

However, there were many who came to his rescue. They supported the young talent saying he got selected due to his skills and not his father’s influence. Famous sports journalist Boria Majumdar and commentator Harsha Bhogle were among the supporters. Here are the tweets:
It is not “Sachin’s son” who is picked for India U19. It is Arjun Tendulkar, a player in his own right and we must respect that.

Did Sachin Tendulkar really lobby for his son?
