Fondly known as ‘Palghar Express’ in Mumbai cricketing circles, Shardul Thakur is the new rising star for Team India. Thakur’s strength lies in being able to bowl crunching outswingers at pace. His impressive records are making everyone take a notice.
Recently, he secured his place in the T20 Tri-nation series. However, the journey of this player was inspired by the ‘God of cricket’ Sachin Tendulkar.
Shardul aimed at making his career as a fast bowler. However, before his debut, he gained weight. His weight increased to 83 kgs and he was reluctant to lose. He stopped paying heed to anyone’s advice about his weight.
Luckily, he met Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar. He advised Shardul that the first step towards creating a career in cricket is being fit. The words worked and he started taking care of his health. During that period, he lost about 13 kgs.
He made his debut in the Ranji Trophy for Mumbai. His performance was underwhelming as he picked just 4 wickets. However, he began honing his skills and the result became apparent with his success in the domestic fold.
Despite consistent performance, he was finding it hard to get noticed by the national selectors. He finally grabbed their attention during Ranji final of 2015/16. Besides his performance, his attitude of fighting for big matches played in his favor. Finally, after many ups and down he made it to the T20 team.
Though his bowling style is fine for the T20 matches, his true skill testing will be in the test matches. His hard work is pushing him forward slowly but consistently in the world of Indian cricket. He is certainly a talent to watch out for in the future.
