Sridevi’s death brought a huge shock to the entire film industry as well as millions of her fans. She was a Padma Shri awardee, which is the fourth highest civilian award and says it all about her talent and contribution to the world of entertainment.

The legendary actress was found dead in the bathtub of her hotel room in Dubai while her husband Boney Kapoor was waiting in the room for her to get ready. Many people, including the Dubai police, speculated the possibility of her being murdered and hence Boney Kapoor had to undergo an investigation in Dubai.

It was only after Dubai police got assured of her death happening due to “accidental drowning” in the bathtub that her family was allowed to take her mortal remains to India. Upon arrival in Mumbai on February 27, Sridevi was cremated on February 28 at Vile Parle Seva Samaj Crematorium.

She was dressed like a bride in a beautiful red and golden Kanjeevaram saree, a red bindi and a traditional mangalsutra. But there was something more to her funeral that became the talk of the town. Her body was draped in a tricolor and she was cremated with state honors.

This left people confused since she wasn’t a martyr. Some people believed that she was given a state funeral for being a Padma Shri awardee, but this isn’t true since Padma Shri awardees are not entitled to a state funeral. Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) leader Raj Thackeray had said that the government had given state honors to Sridevi to divert attention from the Nirav Modi scam. Accepting that Sridevi was a great actor, he had asked what had she done for the country that her body was draped in the tricolor.

As per rules, the state funeral is accorded only to the present and the former Prime Ministers, current and former union ministers and current and former state ministers. Apart from these people, who gets state honors in their funeral is the decision of the state government. The government considers the contribution made by the deceased in the field of social service, science, politics, law, cinema etc. and takes a decision based upon that.

A reply to an RTI filed by activist Anil Galgali to Maharashtra government’s protocol department has revealed that giving a state funeral to the iconic actress was the decision of none other than the state chief minister Devendra Fadnavis. According to the reply, between June 22, 2012 and March 26, 2018, the state government has conferred full state honors for as many as 40 persons, Sridevi being one of them.
