Legendary actor Raj Kapoor founded the iconic RK Studios, which has been the Kapoor family’s second home. RK Studios as we all know is an era, which is, unfortunately, going to end. Built from scratch by Raj Kapoor, it is now being sold due to its continous delabitated state. Just as shocked as we are, the Kapoor family has decided to sell it off, as confirmed by its member Rishi Kapoor. The iconic RK Studio in Mumbai’s Chembur is soon going to be just a memory.
R. K. Films is a film production company which is (soon will be was) based in the RK Studio. Bollywood actor Raj Kapoor founded it in 1948 and it’s named after him.
The studio’s first venture was Aag which didn’t fare well at the box office.
Speaking on the sad occasion, the veteran actor (Rishi) stressed that the “emotional” Kapoors decided to put the RK Studios for sale collectively.
Due to heavy financial losses, the RK Films and Studios, the priceless era for 70 years, was put on sale.
My #daddy always said that if you like something, you simply… say it. You don’t worry about the consequences, because what can go wrong when you express what you truly feel? Well, here’s a beautiful outcome – a note from THE #RajKapoor, after #Joker was released. A #lesson that I hold dear to my #heart. #bollywoodnostalgia #meranaamjoker #rkstudios #happyfathersday #premrog #bollywood #filmmaking #positivevibes #positivethinking
Films like Barsaat, Awaara, Shri 420, Jis Desh Mein Ganga Behti Hai, Mera Naam Joker, Bobby, Satyam Shivam Sundaram, Ram Teri Ganga Maili, among others, were shot here.
Aa Ab Laut Chalein (1999) directed by Rishi Kapoor, was the last film made under the banner which was filmed at RK Studios.
The iconic studio was mortgaged after the debacle of Mera Naam Joker, only to resurface after the hit film Bobby, starring Rishi Kapoor and Dimple Kapadia.
Did you know that the studio was also hosting lavish Holi parties in the 1960s? In fact, celebrities like Amitabh Bachchan was a frequent visitor at these celebrations!
The famous studio also held Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh’s marriage (1980) functions for a good 20 days, including the reception.
However, the studio caught fire and collapsed in 2017 (September). It burnt a host of precious memorabilia including costumes, props, and several famous songs from every RK Films.

While all their films are now in safe custody with National Film Archives of India (NFAI), the Chembur (where it is located) fire left it totally gutted.
The fire led to low yielding results and higher maintenance cost for the Kapoor family, which could never recover from this loss.
Rishi Kapoor, who is very active on Twitter, and also the son of the studio’s founder, posted this message after the devastating fire:
A Studio can be built again but the loss of the irreplaceable memorabilia and costumes of all RK Films,is tragic for all. Fire took it away
— Rishi Kapoor (@chintskap) September 16, 2017
He revealed that even before the fire that destroyed the RK Studios, it was a loss-making machine. The blaze started on the set of dance reality TV show Super Dancer Season 2.
Today, other Kapoor members like Randhir, and Rajiv Kapoor, along with their mother Krishna Kapoor, and sisters Ritu Nanda and Rima Jain, have decided to sell the 1948 iconic place.
Speaking to Mumbai Mirror, Rishi Kapoor said: “The investment in rebuilding the studio would not have yielded sufficient revenue. For years RK Studio had become a huge white elephant, toting up losses.”
To save the studio, the Kapoors even considered using cutting edge technology but the fire made their attempts unrealistic.

Rishi’s son Ranbir Kapoor also wanted to revive RK Films and the studio but his father wants him to now ‘focus on his career after the success of Sanju.’
Meanwhile, the Kapoor family has not set up any deadline for the sale yet. Rishi said ‘It could take up to two days, months or years to sell off the studio’.
