On the occasion of 10 years of the Indian Premier League (IPL), Mumbai Indians former captain and coach, Ricky Ponting has selected his best-ever XI team.
The 11 players that Ponting chose have played in at least one season of the IPL in the past 10 years, with seven spots reserved for Indian players and four international players.
What is interesting about this team is that Pointing selected India’s and Rising Pune Supergiants’ former skipper MS Dhoni as his side’s captain and he gave place to just one Australian player on his list.
Talking about his team selection Ponting said it was very tough selection for him and he had to cut many names.
“It was a very tough team to pick because I could only get the four overseas guys in there. So there were a few notable names that have missed out on selection. Things got pretty difficult but I’ve tried to put the best possible team together that I’ve ever seen in IPL history.”
Ponting gave the opening spots to the destructive duo of Chris Gayle and his former Australian team-mate David Warner.
For the middle order, Ponting went with a very strong unit featuring Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Suresh Raina and MS Dhoni at number 6.
Ponting also selected Dhoni as his captain and said his huge experience will always give the team a winning chance.
“MS Dhoni is at No.6 and he’ll also be the captain of my side. He brings huge experience and whenever he’s at the crease … you’re always a chance of winning the game. I’ve seen him do it off his own bat on several occasions so I’ll go with him as skipper, with the gloves and batting at No.6.”
He followed the middle order with the dynamic trio of Dwayne Bravo, Harbhajan Singh, and Amit Mishra.
Calling Mishra his “shock factor” Ponting added,
“I’ve gone for a bit of a shock here and have put Amit Mishra on the side. He’s got an outstanding IPL record, he’s got great variations and he’s a wicket-taker because he’s not scared to throw the ball up. He turns the ball enough both ways and he’s been a great performer for a long, long time.”
