After having worked for all their life, most people chose to spend their days post retirement in an easy manner. Spending time with friends and family or amidst nature is mostly what people love to do after their retirement. But there are very few who decide to do their bit for the society despite having worked hard for their entire life. Mukesh Sahay, Assam’s retired director general of police (DGP) is one of the few people who belong to the latter category.

Mukesh Sahay who recently retired from the position of DGP of Assam was one of the most well known cops of his state. After serving in the police department for as long as 34 years, he has decided to give it back to the society in a very special way.

Within a week after his retirement, Mukesh Sahay started teaching mathematics to students of class IX and XI at the Sonaram Higher Secondary School in Guwahati’s Bharalumukh area. The school had been facing issue of requirement of a mathematics teacher for quite a few years, but not anymore, all thanks to him.

Mukesh Sahay got to know of the lack of mathematics teacher in school in 2016 when he was invited there as a guest of honor for one of the school functions. Sahay had planned to join the school as a Maths teacher back in 2017 but could not owing to his busy schedule. But after his retirement on May 1, he called the school’s principal Dwinjendra Nath Barthakur and joined his service as Maths teacher at school on May 7.

The Indian Express quotes him saying,

I have never worked as a teacher before — but I am a certified police trainer and that helps. I used to work as a part time tutor to supplement my income in my younger days. The new Class XI batch will join a couple of months later, and perhaps I will begin to teach two lessons when they do. I am quite conversant in Calculus so it has not been too difficult, but I definitely need to do my homework every day. We never stop learning — one must always be socially relevant, physically active and mentally engaged.

Retired police officer’s social work was also shared by Major Surendra Poonia on his twitter page. Check out what he wrote:
