The tweet claimed and falsely blamed Muslims for spreading the coronavirus in India. “f***k the history they may call us nazis who cares,” the tweet said.

Many users and celebrities condemned Rangoli Chandel for the tweet and sought police action.

Jewellery designer Farah Khan tweeted that her post was “shocking beyond belief” and demanded a FIR to be registered against Chandel.

A Twitter spokesperson said in a statement, “At Twitter no one is above our rules. The referenced account was permanently suspended for repeated violations of the Twitter Rules including Hateful Conduct Policy. If we receive reports of potential rule violations, we will take action, as appropriate and pursuant with our enforcement approach, as detailed here.”

Journalist Swati Chaturvedi also sought Twitter’s help to suspend Chandel’s account for making “genocide calls”. Furthermore, director Reema Kagti, from Gully Boy and Talaash fame, also called for police action against the tweet by Chandel for spreading fake news and inciting hatred and violence. Badminton player Jwala Gutta and actor Kubbra Sait also condemned Chandel.

Chandel had nearly 100,000 followers on the platform and was popular among the Indian far-right for her controversial opinions often targeted towards the country’s minorities. In one of her earlier tweets, she called for suspending the 2024 Lok Sabha election given the economic crisis India is facing during the pandemic and let the country’s Hindu nationalist Prime Minister Narendra Modi continue for another term in office unopposed.

She was issued a warning a few weeks back by the social media platform, following which she called the social networking site “anti-national” and said the platform would “go to graveyard” if they suspended her account.

Twitter has been struggling to contain abuse and misinformation on the platforms ever since the coronavirus outbreak started sweeping the planet. It has been making use of a combination of technology like artificial intelligence and machine learning along with human oversight to keep content that violates their policies off their platforms. People who report tweets and accounts, for instance, are now shown this message:
