After the report of the huge scam in the catering department of Central Railway did rounds of media on Tuesday, senior officials of the government addressed the media in order to issue a clarification regarding the same.

Shailendra Kumar, chief commercial manager, Central Railway, Ravindra Goyal, divisional railway manager and Narendra Patil, chief public relation officer, Central Railway addressed the media on Tuesday afternoon. The official statement by the Railway said,

While preparing the computerised statement, an inadvertent typographical error occurred in the item of Amul curd for January 2016. Upon knowledge of this error, a corrected copy of the statement, along with the relevant documents of records, where the actual figure is reflected, was furnished to the RTI applicant

The authorities have clarified that upon examining the issue, it was found that there was an error in the units of commodities mentioned in the reply to RTI while the rates mentioned were correct. The same was made clear by the official Twitter handle of Central Railway too.

As per the reply to RTI, 15,336 cups of 100gm Amul curd were purchased at Rs. 972.87 per cup, the total cost amounting to Rs. 1,49,19,934.32. However, Railway officials have now clarified that 15,336 cups were purchased at Rs.972.87 per carton each of which contained 108 cups of 100 gm Amul curd. Therefore, the total cost amounting to Rs. 1,38,148.

Similarly, there were human errors in calculating the cost of other items bought such as chicken, toor daal, refined oil, Tata salt and moong daal.

The report of the scam also claimed mismatch in stocks, to which, the officials have said that the mismatch was also a result of a mistake. Commenting on the same, Shailendra Kumar, chief commercial manager, Central Railway said

Total stock available includes opening stock and stock purchased. But in the reply only stock purchased was shown which led to miscommunication. This RTI reply had 1200 pages. While making these replies there was negligence. We have initiated action and will make sure that this is not repeated.

Following the faulty reply to the RTI appeal, Douglas Menezes, assistant commercial manager has been transferred whereas three chief catering inspectors T.Mani, C.V.Bhise and Hanumesh Kulkarni have been suspended.

There was a massive stir in media regarding the possible scam in the catering department of Central Railway brought out by the department’s reply to an RTI appeal filed by activist Ajay Bose. According to the reply, several commodities were bought at prices much higher than their Maximum Retail Price and there were significant stock mismatches. The activist had also claimed that the scam was the key factor behind the huge losses in the department.

Learning the news of the big goof-up created by the typos, some people are now blaming Congress party for spreading fake news of a scam in the catering department of Central Railway in an attempt to slander the image of the ruling party. Priyanka Chaturvedi, national spokesperson of Congress party, had tweeted the report of Railway catering department purchasing commodities at inflated prices, asking the Railway Minister to clarify.

Here are some responses by Twitterati slamming Chaturvedi for spreading the “fake news”
