Soon after Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of “lying” on the One Rank, One Pension (OROP) scheme, BJP leader Subramanian Swamy hit back at the Congress leader in equal measure.
Swamy has said that the ‘uneducated’ Congress vice-president should read about the army services scheme.
“Just making blank statements only shows that the man doesn’t apply his mind. I don’t think he knows how to read and write. Ask him to go and read what OROP is. When the Defence Ministry issued it…it covered what OROP covers. I think he is not an educated person, so he makes these kinds of rumours by somebody telling him, some briefing him. They do half briefing and he makes a fool of himself,” Swamy said.
Earlier, the Congress vice president asserted that OROP was the right of military personnel and the government “will have to give it”.
Gandhi who met the ex-servicemen protesting at the Jantar Mantar against the government’s lackadaisical approach on the OROP scheme, said the issue is not about money but honour and justice. He has also alleged that the OROP is actually pension enhancement and not OROP, and the PM should stop lying on the issue.
Rahul Gandhi, who was detained thrice over two days during protests over the suicide by army veteran Ram Kishan Grewal, told reporters. Grewal had allegedly committed suicide over OROP.
Rahul demanded that the government apologise to the family members of the late ex-servicemen. “The family members of the late ex-serviceman were beaten and dragged, this is not right. The government must apologise. Why have ex-servicemen been standing here at Jantar Mantar for the past 509 days? that’s because our government has not implemented OROP.”
Accusing the government of waiving loans of a staggering Rs 1.10 lakh crore of 15 big industrialists, Gandhi said it has nothing to give to soldiers and farmers.
