Netflix’s first original Indian web-series ‘Sacred Games’ has been making headlines ever since the beginning. And now a tweet by INC president Rahul Gandhi about the series has turned into a political debate.
But before we proceed, let’s see what the whole issue is all about. The series has earned critical appraise from all sources, domestic and international. But unfortunately, it has landed up in some trouble with the Indian legal system.
It is interesting to note that the Indian censor board does not censor the content on the internet. Hence some of the content that went uncensored landed the series in legal trouble.
To begin with, the story revolves around a gangster Ganesh Gaitonde who returns after many years of being underground. Subsequently, the show also traces how a police officer Satraj is chasing Gaitonde to save his city.
One of the scenes in the series, shows Gaitonde abusing former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi calling him ‘coward’. Nawaz’s character also implicates that Rajiv Gandhi appeased the Muslim community for his own political benefits.
In a reaction to these scenes, a Congress member filed an FIR against makers and actor of ‘Sacred Games’. But recently, politician Rahul Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi’s son, tweeted something that left most people stunned. Gandhi took to his twitter account and posted the following tweet:
BJP/RSS believe the freedom of expression must be policed & controlled. I believe this freedom is a fundamental democratic right.
My father lived and died in the service of India. The views of a character on a fictional web series can never change that.#SacredGames

Soon after, actress Swara Bhaskar also took to her twitter account and applauded Rahul Gandhi in the following tweet:
It is impressive that a mainstream politician like @RahulGandhi is taking this clear & progressive stand on freedom of expression & censorship. Also it’s gracious & mature that he is able to set aside the personal for the larger goal of democratic rights. #CreditWhereDue 👏🏾👏🏾 https://t.co/cfEU0S2KaS

Sacred Games co-director Anurag Kashyap also could not stop himself from rejoicing at Rahul’s tweet. Take a look at what he posted:

Tweeple also took the opportunity and reacted to the exchange of tweets in their own funny way. Here are some of the most interesting responses by Twitterati:
A suppressive party like Congress does not look good talking about freedom of expression (FOE).
A party who suppressed voice of people by implementation of Emergency
Killing of raping of Sikhs
and banning artists for not performing in thier private functions, FOE ki baat karte hue, achhe nahi lagte!!

Sacred Games is based on hardcore facts, Rahul Gandhi could not have taken any other stand on the matter.
How typical of Bharat tere tukde gang that they pathetically & shamefully defend their employer! Could @RahulGandhi take diff stand on #SacredGames when each n evry word of movie is based on hard core facts n figures?

After this tweet, Rahul Gandhi will quit Congress.
RAGHUL GANDHI GOING TO QUIT CONGRESS

If Rahul really believes in FOE, Congress should let ‘Sacred Games’ show whatever they want.
So let #SacredGames show what they want.
Why did UPA govt. Didn’t allow #Amu to be screened and made completely? First practice what you preach.
Even if we don’t count Emergency days , enough FOE hs been curtailed during Congress Rule

Before rejoicing, Anurag should first ask Rahul to take the FIR back.

Guess we’ll just have to wait and watch if anyone is going to take the FIR against ‘Sacred Games’ back, in light of Rahul Gandhi’s tweet. What do you think?
