Published on 16 January, 2019 at 5:14 pm By

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was recently awarded the ‘first ever’ Philip Kotler Presidential award. The award, named after the marketing guru Philip Kotler himself, was bestowed by the World Marketing Summit (WMS) India. The WMS, which aims to engage global leaders and entrepreneurs to create a poverty-free world, was founded by Kotler. However, as soon as PMO’s Twitter handle posted the three pictures of prime minister posing with the award, the Opposition took the opportunity to roast the prime minister on social media.

Searching more about the award, the news portal The Wire, found that an Aligarh-based research firm was hired by WMS India. The owner of the firm was quoted as saying: “It’s a very confidential award.”

With everyone guessing about the origins of the award, Opposition chief Rahul Gandhi took an at the government for bestowing the ‘world famous’ award on PM Modi. He said the award was so ‘famous’ that it had ‘no jury’ and was backed by an ‘unheard of Aligarh company.’

CPM general secretary Yechury too attacked PM Modi:

Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah, too, did not spare Modi. He tweeted:

Meanwhile, an outraged Union Textile Minister Smriti Irani tweeted that it was ‘rich’ of Gandhi to talk about such things:

While Philip Kotler was not part of the ceremony that awarded the PM, he sent an email to Dr Jagdish Sheth of Emory University who handed the award to Modi.

Amid the growing controversy related the award, Philip Kotler came forward and said:

“He has improved his country’s image and visibility on the global stage. A committee voted on possible leaders given the criteria. The final decision was mine.”

He wrote that the Kotler leader is one who believes in representative government and in social justice, and that a good society will build a healthy business climate.

However, when a media house contacted Dr. Sheth, who handed the award to PM Modi, he said that there was no “jury” that decided on the award, and it was a decision of Professor Kotler himself who consulted a few people.

Here are some of Philip Kotler’s tweets related to the awards:

However, some users even cast doubts on the authenticity of the handle. Prof. Philip Kotler is a well known Professor of Marketing at Northwestern University, Kellogg School of Management.
