Menstruation/ Period is nothing more than a social taboo in India. People call impure, dirty, and what not. Ignoring the biggest reality that this so-called “impure” process blesses a woman to give birth and because of this “dirty” process we are able to welcome our new generations.
Menstruation has been a hush-hush topic just like sex. Neglecting the practicalities and facts people have always believed the myths when it comes to periods. From calling women untouchable to treating her like a garbage, our ancestors have done this all. However, Radhika Apte has left everyone surprised by making a shocking revelation. The actress who will be soon seen opposite Akshay Kumar in the movie ‘Padman’ revealed that her mother threw a party when she had her first period.
The actress’s revelation was enough to shock others. Radhika added that she even got gifts for having her first period. Here’s what she said at the launch event of her forthcoming movie Padman’s first song ‘Aaj Se Teri’.
“My parents were doctors and so I was told that this would happen. On the day, my mother threw a party and gifted me a watch. I was crying, but still I got lots of gifts.”
Movie ‘Pad Man’ is already being lauded among the fans because of the social topic that the makers have raised in the film.
The movie is inspired by the life of Arunachalam Muruganantham, the man who made low-cost sanitary napkins. Talking about the issue of menstruation hygiene during the event, the director of the film R Balki said:
“When I was very young, my mother used to sit outside in the courtyard. I never understood why she sat there for so long. There used to be a cloth hanging. During that time, she never came into the kitchen. I used to hang a similar cloth next to her. I thought it was something you needed to have, some kind of rule. All of us have seen our mothers, sisters, wives someone around us going through this. It is all about being sensitive.”
