Qandeel Baloch was a Pakistani model and social media sensation who was killed by her brother in July 2016 because she had allegedly dishonored the family.
Qandeel’s killing had reignited the debate over honor killings in Pakistan, a country which has a dubious record of such killings.
Her brother, Aslam Shaheen, was accused of murder. But what about the family?
The family now lives in penury.
According to a report in a Pakistani daily, Qandeel, whose real name was Fauzia Azeem, was the sole breadwinner for the family.
In fact, it was Qandeel’s fame which brought the bucks for her family to survive in Multan. Today, the family is unable to pay the rent of the house they live in.
Qandeel used to pay the rent, the medical bills and for the food. Her father Muhammad Azeem said that she was the “only financial supporter” for the family as well as for the brother who killed her.
Unable to bear the expenses in the city, they are now planning to move to their ancestral home in Shah Sardar town in Dera Ghazi Khan in Pakistan’s Punjab.
Qandeel’s brother has not been punished yet and the parents are now defending him. This is why the Multan police filed a criminal case against Qandeel’s parents.
