In one of the worst attacks on security forces in Kashmir, terrorists targeted a convoy with a car bomb at Awantipora in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pulwama district on February 14. The deadly attack killed at least 40 CRPF jawans. As per media reports, terrorists used a Mahindra Scorpio carrying more than 350 kg of explosives to attack the convoy. The IED blast was followed by gunshots in Goripora area of Awantipora.

Immediately after the attacks, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) to assess the security situation in the state with top ministers including Home Minister Rajnath Singh, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj, and Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. In this meeting, three military chiefs were also present.

The Awantipora attack has drawn widespread criticism from all across the globe. PM Modi has given a strong message to Imran Khan-led government in Pakistan saying that India will give a “strong reply” to the terrorist attack.

Major military powers including the US, Russia, and France have also strongly condemned the attacks. See the below tweets.

Across the nation, there has been widespread anger among people against the merciless killing of the jawans. Infuriated over the terror attack, Twitterati is calling for revenge attacks with a surgical strike 2.0.

Here are some of the reactions:

The Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) has claimed responsibility for it. There is a video that is doing the round on social media which shows a video clip of the suicide bomber, identified as Adil Ahmed Dar, brandishing guns in front of the group’s flags. It is said that the video was shot before Adil Ahmad Dar carried out the attack in Lethpora.
