The police busted a prostitution racket at a guest house owned by the wife of Meghalaya Home Minister HDR Lyngdoh.
An employee of the guest house Usha Deb Barman (37) was arrested along with another woman Momoni Pardon (27) on charge of trafficking and forcing a minor into prostitution, police said. The minor, who was working as a maid, was rescued after she managed to escape from the guest house, they said.
The woman and the waiter were remanded to five-day police custody after they were arrested under Section 5 of the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act.
“The victim first came to Shillong after she was employed as a maid. The woman befriended the minor and then her into prostitution,” SP (City) Vivek Syiem said.
As per the FIR lodged by the girl, she has been staying with the arrested woman for almost one year. The FIR revealed that the minor girl was exploited by the woman in her house besides sending her to guest houses and hotels.
The wife of the HDR Lyngdoh has confirmed that her son is the proprietor of the guest house. However, she claims that she had no idea as to what her manager was doing as she had not visited the guest house since last one month.
