It is very well known that owning a car means a regular trip to the service station is inevitable. However, it is quite evident that an average car owner doesn’t know the details about the mechanics of the car. Then, in this case, there are high chances that many car dealerships and mechanics can take advantage of the vulnerability of the car owner. While many smart people are able to protect themselves from overpaying for repairs, there are many who become the target of the fraudsters.
Apparently, we have come across one such case in which a popular car dealership tried to overcharge the car owner for fixing the vehicle. According to media reports, one of the members of Team-BHP, Navin has posted a story of his friend being overcharged by Autobahn dealership of popular automobile brand Skoda based in Mumbai. Well incidentally, it all started when Navin’s friend’s Skoda Laura broke down on August 16, and she was not able to start it.
Evidently, next day on August 17, Navin’s friend contacted the Skoda India dealer named Autobahn Enterprises Pvt. Ltd. and told them about the problems the car was facing. The Skoda dealer got the car towed to the service station and inspected the car. After a proper checkup, the Skoda dealer gave a quote to Navin’s friend and she couldn’t believe her eyes.
Apparently, the quote that the Skoda dealer gave for fixing the car was for whopping Rs 1.68 lakh, out of which Rs 1.43 lakh were for the machinery and parts and Rs 25,000 for the labour of the job. Thankfully, the owner of the car had some knowledge about cars and immediately realized that the Skoda dealer was trying to cheat her.
This is when the owner got in touch with her friend Nitin from Bharat Auto Associates and got her car towed from Skoda dealer to a non-Skoda authorized car service center. However, she still had to pay an amount of Rs 3,000 for releasing her car from the Skoda India dealer.
According to Nitin:
“The car reached Bharat Auto’s workshop on August 21 afternoon at 4 pm from the Skoda dealer and after the diagnosis, we found that it was only the rubber belt that needed to be changed (the first item in Autobahn Skoda’s initial invoice circled in orange below). The total cost of this service (including labor) came to be about Rs. 1,000, as against Autobhan Skoda’s estimate of Rs. 1, 68,000. It took a total of 2 hours to diagnose and fix this car. My friend’s car was ready by 6 pm on August 21 itself.”
Shocking isn’t it?! Apparently, the Skoda dealer quoted the owner an unreasonable amount of Rs 1.68 lakh, but she got it fixed for only Rs 1,062, which is inclusive of labor and GST.
Well, it seems like if the owner was not alert enough to realize the situation, then she would have been forced to pay the exorbitant amount to Autobahn Skoda dealer. This definitely puts a light on the outrageous prices that the ‘authorized car dealers’ charge for their services to the customers and how it is important for every consumer to be aware of their rights and always stay alert about the money that they are paying for the services to such car dealers.
