The Indian government has announced something big to save many children against rape and sexual crimes. Sexual assault against children is such a serious offense that any punishment seems weak. Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) is one act which saves the child’s rights and punishes the sexual offenders. On December 28, the Indian Government’s Cabinet announced several amendments to the act to protect young children from heinous crimes. An increasing number of rape crimes against children triggered the need of these amendments.
In a landmark decision, Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad announced the death penalty for aggravated sexual assault against children below the age of 12 years. This will include the sex assault of boys along with the girls. The definition of aggravated penetrative sexual assault has also been amended to include an offense that causes the death of a child. The punishment for penetrative sexual assault will now be 10 years instead of seven.
The amendments came after the Kathua outrage when a little girl was brutally raped in Jammu and Kashmir. In April 2018, the government had brought an ordinance and then the bill was passed in Parliament during the monsoon session to amend the Indian Penal Code. The changes were in support of girls only. The amendments were:
- Death penalty for the gang rape of a girl under 12 years.
- 20 years in jail or death penalty for rape of a girl under 16 years.
The current changes to POCSO will address the absence of punishment in the cases of boys of the same age. POCSO Act, 2012, will now deal with sexual crimes against both girls and boys, and no lighter punishments will be carried in case of boys.
Indian citizens are happy with the changes made and took to Twitter to congratulate the Indian government.
Right decision. Hang the bastards.

Make it public hanging … I will buy tickets to watch it. Demasculinized society is the result we deal with such crimes with such soft hands. If found guilty they should be killed brutally.

The amendments are needed to be passed by Parliament. Once passed, it will be in action. The changes will now bring equality in dealing with serious sexual crimes against children in our country and no offender will be saved. What do you think of the amendments made in the POCSO Act?
