Taking India’s grand old party head-on, PM Narendra Modi on February 7 gave a fiery speech in Lok Sabha and sought to corner the Congress on issues of corruption, policymaking and dynastic politics. In his speech, that included several barbs at Rahul Gandhi, the prime minister blamed the Congress for country’s partition, accusing the party of devoting its energies to “the interests of one family,” while neglecting the interests of the nation. Reviving the corruption debate, he said the nation is paying for the “sins” of the party. In Rajya Sabha, he told lawmakers that it was Mahatma Gandhi who had first pitched the idea of a Congress-free India.

PM Modi said:

“Don’t lecture us on democracy. It was your party chief who tore up an ordinance and threw it in the faces of the media… It was your party chief who did not let young leaders get their points of view.”

He added:

“It is in your character that the division of India happened. The country was broken into pieces and you sowed the poison. After 70 years of independence, not a day passes when the 125 crore Indians do not get punished for your sins. You broke India into pieces and you did it keeping elections in mind, in haste and closing doors of Parliament.”

However, PM Modi’s speech was interspersed with sloganeering and disruptions by opposition members. In his comments, Congress president Rahul Gandhi said that it was a “political and campaign speech” that had focused on the opposition. He attacked the PM, saying:

“The prime minister spoke nothing about employment for youth; he had promised 2 crore jobs. The talk of farmers, giving them right prices and loan waivers —the PM instead spoke about bees and bamboo.”

During some lighter moments, Rajya Sabha chairman Venkaiah Naidu rebuked Congress leader Renuka Chowdhury for laughing during Modi’s speech. Seeing this, PM Modi said, “SabhapatiJi meri aapse vinti hai Renuka Ji ko kuch mat kahiye. Ramayan serial ke baad aisi hansi sunne ka saubhagya aaj jaake mila hai. (Chairman sir, I request you to not say anything to Renukaji. After Ramayan serial, we have got the privilege of hearing this kind of laughter today).

Twitterati too had a field day over PM Modi’s speech:
