In other parts of the world, it seems like marrying one’s own cousins or relatives is not seen in high regards or not so popular. However, in Pakistan, this seems like quite a common norm. It is known from the fact that there are several popular personalities in the country who are married with their own cousins. 1. Shahid Afridi
Former Pakistan national cricket team captain Shahid Afridi married his maternal cousin Nadia. They have been married since 2000. They are blessed with four daughters.
2. Saeed Anwar
This former Pakistani cricketer married his cousin sister Lubna Anwar, who is a doctor by profession. They got married in 1996. Anwar faced a huge personal tragedy when his daughter, Bismah, died after a prolonged illness in 2001. The death of Bismah left a huge impact on the life of Anwar and he turned into a religious preacher.
3. Shaista Lodhi
Shaista Lodhi is a Pakistani actress and TV presenter. She was briefly married to Waqar Wahid but got divorced. She later married her cousin Adnan Lodhi.
4. Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan
Legendary singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan married his uncle’s daughter Naheed Nusrat. Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Naheed Nusrat had a daughter named Nida Fateh Ali Khan.
5. Sanam Marvi
Popular Pakistani Sufi singer Sanam Marvi is married to her cousin Hamid Ali Khan. They have three children. Sanam’s first husband, Aftab Ahmed Pharero, was murdered in Karachi in 2009.
6. Babar Khan
Babar Khan is a popular Pakistani TV actor and model. He married his cousin Bisma after the death of his first wife, Sana Khan, in a car accident. Bisma was in standard 9 when the two got married in 2015.
7. Reham Khan
Reham Khan is a journalist and film producer. She was first married to her British psychiatrist cousin Ijaz Rehman. She later married former Pakistani cricketer and politician Imran Khan. However, Reham and Imran’s marriage didn’t last for more than a year.
Whether true or not, but it is said that 82.5% of the parents in Pakistan have been found having a blood relation till the third generation. It means that they have either married a cousin or someone close in the same family.
