The Trump administration refused to grant a visa to Pakistan’s deputy chairman Senate Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haideri. So what did Pakistan do? They cancelled a planned visit of their senators to the US.
The decision not to send their Senators to the US was later taken by the Pakistani Senate Chairman Raza Rabbani.
But Pakistan also issued a directive that “no delegation, member of Congress or diplomats of the USA will be welcomed by the Senate of Pakistan, Senate’s standing committees and the senators in their official capacity till this issue is resolved”.
The Maulana also happens to be the secretary general of one of Pakistan’s largest Islamic parties, Jamiat Ulema Islam (JUI).
The US did not say why they refused the Maulana’s visa. But they issued a visa to Senator Salahuddin Tirmizi.
Lt. Gen. (retd) Salahuddin Tirmizi, a member of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, was to accompany Maulana to attend the IPU hearing at the UN headquarters on February 13 and 14.
It should be noted that President Trump’s temporary ban on refugees from seven Islamic countries does not include Pakistan.
Well, Pak-US diplomacy just went slightly sour.
