A child sex abuse scandal, dubbed as the biggest ever in the country’s history, rocked the society and the political establishment of Pakistan.

Around 400 graphic videos involving 280 children being forced to have sex was discovered in Hussain Khanwala village in Kasur district of The Punjab province of Pakistan last week.

The horrific nature of the crime can be gauged from the age of the victims: most of them under 14. The victims include a six-year-old boy, who was forced to perform a homosexual act.

Although the child sex abuse had been happening in the area for quite some time (a report dates it back to 2006), it attracted national attention only after the families of the victims clashed with the police blaming the latter of ignoring their complaints.

The abuse was orchestrated by a gang of up to 25 young men and teenagers led by two men in their 40s. The men filmed the abuse and used the videos to blackmail the families of the victims extorting millions from them.

Quoting sources, Al Jazeera reports that a 10-year-old schoolgirl was filmed being molested by a 14-year-old boy. Some victims said that they were injected with a spinal drug before being assaulted. Children were so terrified of the abuse at the hands of the blackmailers that they were forced to steal from their homes.

The Nation reports that the number of victims in this child abuse case is almost three times higher than in the case of Javed Iqbal in the late 1990s, when around 100 children were sexually abused and murdered in Lahore.

The Chief Minister of The Punjab province, Shahbaz Sharif, has ordered a judicial inquiry, but only seven people have been arrested so far in connection with the scandal.

Meanwhile outrage continues across Pakistan.
