Former CBFC chief, “Sanskari” Pahlaj Nihalani, who was always busy cutting bold scenes from Bollywood movies to make them fit under his personal censorship requirements, is again in the news but this time for completely contrasting reasons. Nihalani is now one of the distributors of Deepak Shivdasani’s ‘Julie 2’, the sequel of ‘Julie’ that was very well known for its adult content.

Pahlaj Nihalani banned Alankrita Srivastava’s ‘Lipstick Under My Burkha’ citing it as being “lady oriented” and “a danger to women”. He did not even welcome content of some other films such as ‘Jab Harry Met Sejal’ and ‘A Gentleman’. The way he censored films in his tenure as head of the Censor Board is unforgettable for everyone, especially the ‘Udta Punjab’ controversy.

As the information of Nihalani backing ‘Julie 2’ is revealed, it left millennials wondering how the “sanskari” man who did not allow on-screen kissing beyond a few seconds, held the use of word “intercourse” unsuitable for a film’s trailer, and raised his eyebrows at almost every film will now be distributing just the kind of film he always opposed while he headed the censor board.

The poster of the film was released in August and shows of the bare back of its lead actress covered by a sheer cloth. Directed by Deepak Shivdasani, the film will mark Raai Laxmi’s debut in Bollywood. The first part of the film was also directed by Shivdasani and introduced Neha Dhupia into the Hindi film industry.

Call it irony or anything else, Nihalani is now backing a project that would have been “bold and unpleasant” by his standards of decency during his tenure as CBFC chief. Mumbai Mirror quotes him saying,

My last films were Sridevi’s Tamil film Puli, followed by the 2016 Iranian-Indian drama Salaam Mumbai. My family loved Julie 2, it’s a bold thriller about how talented people come into the industry and then are forced to compromise. It’s a good expose with a message for aspiring actors who come from across the county and don’t get the right people or platform. Julie 2 should be given an ‘A’ certificate without any cuts. There is no vulgarity, obscenity or even a language problem. This is a hot seat, you have to be careful with guidelines which are perfect and only the rating system we require. There were cuts because I have followed the guidelines
