All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi recently chanted slogans of ‘Hindustan Zindabad’ and ‘Jai Hind’ and said he did not need a certificate of patriotism from anyone.
While addressing party’s workers in Lucknow on March 28, Owaisi said:
“We (Muslims) do not need deshbhakt certification from anyone. We do not require any proof. Those who are questioning our patriotism are traitors. From 1857 to independence, these people had no existence while we shed our blood and were hanged by Britishers.”
Earlier this month, Owaisi stirred a controversy when he said that he will never chant ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai’ even if a knife is put to his throat.
Due to his statement, he faced a lot of flak from BJP and Shiv Sena, who asked to revoke the citizenship of people who refuse to chant the slogan.
An ABVP member even announced a reward of Rs.21,000 for cutting Owaisi’s tongue.
The AIMIM chief, who was not given permission to hold public meetings by the U.P. administration, said:
“It is an open secret that the SP and BJP are two sides of the same coin. RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat has been given permission to hold public meetings and stay in Lucknow, but a ban was always imposed on us because in reality, the SP government is afraid of us.”
Predicting a rout for the SP government when the state goes to poll next year, Owaisi said that AIMIM’s contest is with 10 percent of the people as 90 percent support their party.
