Best known for his cinematography on movies like ‘Omkara’ and ‘Kaminey’, Tassaduq Hussain Mufti, son of former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Mufti Mohammed Sayeed is set to play a vital role in the state politics.
There were indications that Tassaduq might take major responsibility in the party after he was introduced by his sister Mehbooba Mufti at a recent meeting of the PDP’s core group.
It was the first official meeting after the death of Sayeed, who passed away on Januray 7 in AIIMS in New Delhi.
Tassaduq, an American film institute graduate, is known in Bollywood as Tassaduq Hussain, and not by famous surname.
After the death of his father, he tried his best to save himself from the crowd and the cameras. During the mourning period of his father at the Mufti residence in Gupkar Road, Srinagar, Tassaduq appeared as a shy and introvert young man.
In Kashmir Valley, people hardly know him the way they know the family of Abdullahs. While Mehbooba Mufti, a divorcee and mother of two daughters, is a very popular figure. Tassaduq always maintained that he has no interest in politics.
Gulshan Nazir Ara, wife of Mufti Mohammed Sayeed and mother of Tassaduq, had once said, “Wherever he is, he should be happy.”
When the 44-year-old Tassaduq was introduced to party leaders, many were seeing him for the first time.
Besides being an acclaimed cinematographer, Tassaduq is also a documentary film-maker who made a lyrically beautiful advertisement film on Kashmir tourism.
Based in Bengaluru, Tassaduq is married to a Sikh woman from Punjab. Throughout the late chief minister’s political career, he was almost never seen in public with his father or his sister.
It was only after the death of his father that everyone saw him in public at his late father’s grave, standing alongside with his family members.
Sources in the party said Tassaduq is the man who was helping Sayeed in turning Srinagar city into a heritage city. He crafted the idea and provided valuable suggestions to his father.
Sources told TY News that Mehbooba Mufti is emotionally dependent on his brother, after the death of his father who nurtured her as a politician.
“His vision will be reflected in the party,” sources said.
There were reports that when Mehbooba Mufti becomes the first woman Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Tassaduq will be contesting elections from his sister’s Anantnag parliamentary seat. But sources said that nothing has been decided yet on this matter.
A party leader, on condition of anonymity, described Tassaduq as a person who never says things which he cannot do. He said that if Tassaduq joins politics, he will think from every point of view before taking any decision.
The source said that if Tassaduq joins politics, he will be supported by the party in every manner.
When this reporter asked about Omar Abdullah’s open to letter to Mehbooba Mufti, the party leader said that every option is being explored before taking any decision. A PDP leader said that they are not afraid for going for new elections.
The coming weeks will be important for the state of Jammu and Kashmir. The man who crafts visuals on the reel might have to craft an entirely different visual in the real world.
