A Social Welfare Officer of UP government was shot seven times in chest because he exposed the rampant corruption the department.
Rinku Singh Rahi, who joined the service in 2008-2009, was shot seven times for being a whistleblower. Rahi had joined the department after passing the PSC examinations at the age of 28. He refused to take bribe and used RTI to expose the corruption in the department worth Rs.40 crores.
According to Rahi, on March 26, 2009, he was playing badminton early in the morning near his government accommodation in Muzzafarnagar. He saw three men arrive with rifles who shot at him blindly. Rahi took seven bullets to his chest and collapsed instantly. He further added that his seniors lived near by but no one came forward to help him.
Dainik Jagran reports that Rahi was put on ventilator for four months, following which he lost one eye and suffered serious injuries on his face. He was then transferred to Lalitpur district and has been facing criticism since then. Rahi also had to approach the court to ask for protection and to prove his innocence.
Rahi also mentioned that while he was admitted in the hospital, he did not receive any pay and has become a laughing stock in the department. His colleagues address him as a dead man and a crazy person. The government has also refused to accept him as a whistle blower while his seniors disrespect him. Rahi further revealed that despite exposing the rampant corruption, the government has not taken any steps and the corruption remains intact in the system.
