It’s a fact that finally, Indian badminton is in glorious form and, with players like Lakshya Sen, the future looks extremely bright!
15 year-old Lakshya Sen, who hails from Almora has made the nation proud. Lakshya has become the No.1 junior singles badminton player in the world as per the latest ranking issued by the Badminton World Federation (BWF). He is also the first badminton player from Uttarakhand to attain the numero uno spot at the international level.
As per the current ranking by BWF, Lakshya has left Chia Hao of Chinese Taipei behind who has 16,091 points; and has been ranked one after scoring a total of 16,903 points in eight tournaments that he has played in the season.
Lakshya comes from a badminton family. His father is a coach in the Sports Authority of India. Lakshya is not the only player from his family, his elder brother Chirag is also among the top junior players in India and reached the World No 2 spot earlier.
With all the support from his family, Lakshya is being trained under the guidance of Deepika Padukone’s father Prakash Padukone, at his academy in Bangalore since the age of 10. Prakash Padukone, after judging Lakshya’s potentia,l has been giving him special attention over the last couple of years. He even monitors his progress and prepares his day-to-day schedule. After such extensive training, both Lakshya’s and Padukone’s hard work paid off.
This is what Prakash Padukone said after Lakshya’s achievement:
We were expecting this, perhaps it has come a little bit sooner than expected. Lakshya is a naturally gifted player and is quick to grasp the finer points of the game. I felt he had some very special qualities from the very beginning. The idea now is to help him keep developing tactically, which I feel is very important in the modern game where everyone tends to play a similar style as opposed to the ’80s and ’90s. I see my job as the one posing the questions, making him come up with the answers and I find he is faster at that than other players.
