On December 16, 2012, one of the most barbaric incidents happened in New Delhi, a 23 year-old girl was brutally raped by five men in a private bus. This inhuman incident filled the whole country with rage and utter despair, and justice for Nirbhaya, India’s daughter, became the only voice of the nation.
In 2013, the four main convicts were sentenced to death by a trial court, and the minor was sent to a reformatory. As the case progressed in court, the Delhi high court, too, confirmed the death sentence. The main accused, Ram Singh, died in jail, and other convicts challenged their sentence at the supreme court.
Yesterday, after years of trials, Nirbhaya’s parents have finally got justice, in other words, India got justice. The Supreme court awarded the death sentence to all the four convicts.
We cannot even imagine the trauma that Nirbhaya’s parents went through in all these years. After the SC verdict, Nirbhaya’s father told PTI about what this justice means to him,
I will sleep peacefully tonight. She would have turned 28 on May 10 if she had lived. Today’s verdict is a gift for her.
Nirbhaya’s mother, Asha Devi, told that her daughter was her true strength in this long battle,
At times I would feel weak, wanting to give up the fight. But then my daughter’s face would flash in front of my eyes and I would pull myself up. There was “not a moment” when I had not remembered her daughter.
But, their fight is not over. Nirbhaya’s parents have started a “Nirbhaya Jyoti Trust” to help rape victims. They will continue to fight for justice for other rape victims. Nirbhaya’s father said,
What about justice for others whose cases are pending in courts. who commit such crimes should hang their heads, not us.
More strength to his Nirbhaya’s parents!
