The film fraternity, especially filmmakers, are rejoicing because the maharaja of sanskaars aka Pahlaj Nihalani has been sacked. The credit for this goes to the very vigilant minister, Smriti Irani.
Pahlaj has been a pain in the ass because of his “cutting” strategies. The former CBFC chief was tirelessly trying to make every Bollywood film his sanskaari project. Kissing. No. Sex. No. Homosexuality. No. Profanity. No.
Grow up, Nihalani, we aren’t directing ‘Tom & Jerry’ cartoons here. This is cinema and art.
Recently, he gave a candid interview with a senior journalist at Lehren TV. In his interview, he revealed a lot about the internal politics that happens in the censor board, but it is hard to say that it is the truth.
He attacked the I&B minister, Smriti Irani, in the first place,
At the I&B Ministry, I was their target number 1. It all started when I didn’t clear Madhur Bhandarkar’s ‘Indu Sarkar’. She gave me a call asking why I hadn’t done so. I said, I was following guidelines and now the film is already with the Tribunal. I told her if she wants she can get it cleared from the Tribunal. I wasn’t massaging her ego and it was only a matter of time before I was thrown out.
He stated that it was the ministry that ordered him not to clear ‘Udta Punjab’,
There was pressure from every side to not clear the film. I cannot tell you how much pressure I was under. There was pressure from many places to not pass it. Despite that, I cleared the film but with the guidelines. There was a letter from the Home Ministry to not clear Kabir Khan’s ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ as it was releasing on Eid and they feared that it could lead to communal problems.
